Are Peptides Legal in the UK? The Law on Buying and Selling Research Peptides

UK peptide law cover with balance scales, a law book and a research-use-only vial.

Short answer: yes, it is legal to buy and sell most peptides in the UK for research purposes. The longer answer depends on what the peptide is, who is supplying it, and what it is being supplied for. This page sets out the framework as it applies to research peptides such as BPC-157, TB-500, CJC-1295 and retatrutide.

Are peptides controlled drugs?

The vast majority of research peptides are not controlled under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. Possessing or buying them is not a criminal offence. The main exceptions in this area are somatropin (growth hormone) and chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG), which are Class C controlled drugs alongside anabolic steroids; supplying them without authority is an offence. Growth-hormone-releasing peptides (GHRPs, sermorelin, CJC-1295) are distinct molecules and are not listed.

Peptides and medicines law

The more relevant framework is the Human Medicines Regulations 2012, enforced by the MHRA. A product becomes a “medicinal product” by presentation (it is marketed as treating or preventing a condition) or by function (it has a pharmacological action that restores, corrects or modifies physiological functions). Selling an unlicensed medicinal product, or advertising a product with medical claims, is an offence. That is why a lawful UK peptide supplier:

  • labels products “for research use only – not for human consumption”;
  • makes no claims about treating, curing or preventing any condition;
  • provides no usage instructions;
  • supplies laboratory documentation (COA, HPLC, MS) rather than medical information.

Some peptides are also active ingredients in licensed medicines — semaglutide (Ozempic/Wegovy), tirzepatide (Mounjaro), tesamorelin (Egrifta). Their licensed forms are prescription-only medicines; research-grade material is not a substitute for, or equivalent to, the licensed product.

Is it legal to buy peptides in the UK?

Yes. Buying research peptides from a UK supplier is lawful. There is no licence requirement for the purchaser. Buyers should understand that products are supplied on the basis that they will be used for laboratory research, and that the supplier cannot and does not provide guidance on any other use.

Importing peptides into the UK

Ordering from overseas suppliers is where most problems arise. Parcels are subject to Border Force inspection, import VAT and duty, and can be seized if they are judged to be unlicensed medicines rather than research materials. Delivery is slower and returns are impractical. Buying from a UK-based supplier avoids customs entirely — which is one reason UK researchers increasingly prefer domestic suppliers with UK stock and fast delivery.

Peptides and sport

Separately from the law, most research peptides are prohibited in competitive sport under the World Anti-Doping Code: GH secretagogues and growth factors under S2, and non-approved compounds such as BPC-157 and TB-500 under S0. Tested athletes should treat all of these as banned.

How PeptidesNextDay operates

PeptidesNextDay is a UK company supplying research-grade peptides to laboratories, universities and independent researchers. All products are labelled for research use only, shipped from UK stock with batch-specific certificates of analysis, and sold without medical claims or usage instructions. Questions about our documentation and testing are answered on the FAQ page and in this guide to COAs and HPLC purity.

Are peptides legal in the UK?

Yes, to buy and to sell for research. They are not controlled drugs, but unlicensed peptides cannot lawfully be sold or advertised as medicines.

Is it lawful for UK laboratories to buy research peptides?

Yes. Buying research peptides that are not controlled drugs from a UK supplier is lawful. Importing from abroad risks seizure at the border if the parcel is treated as an unlicensed medicine.

Is BPC-157 legal in the UK?

It is not a controlled substance and is legal to buy and sell for research. It is not a licensed medicine and is banned in sport.

Is retatrutide legal in the UK?

It is not controlled and is legal as research material. It is an investigational drug with no marketing authorisation, so it cannot be prescribed or sold as a medicine.

Do I need a licence to buy peptides?

No licence is required to purchase research peptides in the UK.
